Investing In
Alpacas
Breeding alpacas can be a very sound and profitable investment for a wide range of
situations.  Whether you have hundreds of acres, or just a couple of acres, or no acreage at
all, you can participate in this growing industry of breeding alpacas.

Importation of alpacas from South America has been closed.  Each alpaca born in the United
States must have their DNA proven before they can be registered.  And almost all American
alpacas are registered.  This helps to keep the American standards high, our alpacas
healthy, and our breeding practices focused on developing the best alpaca fiber in the
world.  Alpacas are fully insurable, making your investment safer.

You can have an alpaca farm in many different areas.  On several acres in a rural setting, or
maybe a couple acres zoned for livestock in a city.  Or you can board them (we call this
agisting) on someone elses farm and pay a nominal daily fee to make sure they are taken
care of correctly.

Alpacas are very easy to take care of.  They are perfect for first-time livestock owners.  They
require minimal fencing and shelter, and only need a simple diet consisting of hay, grain,
grass and some supplements similar to other herbivorous herd animals.  Alpacas are gentle
and shy animals.  They make good 4-H projects for kids and are great livestock for families
with children.

Gestation in alpacas is just over 11 months.  Which makes developing the National herd into
enough animals to support a fiber mill a very long process.    Fiber is the end goal with these
animals so increasing the number of alpacas here in the states is very important.  We
currently have just over 100,000 alpacas registered in the United States.  This just makes the
demand for alpacas higher along with their prices.  The opportunity to earn a living breeding
these animals is very good, along with earning a profit while doing it.  There are also
wonderful tax advantages for breeding alpacas.
